Set in a beautiful natural environment, we were invited to design a Japanese-style garden in California. The client, originally from New Zealand, gave us full creative freedom to design her garden.
Inspired by the beauty of nature, we created a garden that blends naturally with its surroundings, offering a calm and restorative setting for this Hatha Yoga and meditation enthusiast.
The living room opens onto distant views, which we “borrowed” to incorporate into the gardenfollowing the Japanese shakkei principle. Pines pruned in the Japanese style connect visually with the natural landscape beyond. A stone path of nobedan and stepping stones allows easy circulation around the house, even when the ground is wet.
A small fountain, or tsukubai, near the wooden terrace at the entrance provides the relaxing sound of flowing water and a place for birds to drink during the summer.
This Japanese-style garden offers a peaceful and inspiring space to enjoy and contemplate nature.
