Japanese inspired Mediterranean garden designer in the French Riviera
The landscapes of the French Riviera have a timeless beauty, where olive trees, maritime pines, dry stone walls and Mediterranean light create an extraordinary setting for outdoor living. At Studio Mathieu Besnier, we design immersive gardens that celebrate this unique heritage while introducing the serenity and refinement of Japanese-inspired landscape art through elegant outdoor living design.
As a landscape architect, Mathieu Besnier spent nearly ten years in California studying landscape design and Japanese aesthetic pruning in a Mediterranean climate remarkably similar to the Côte d’Azur. This experience inspired the creation of a studio dedicated to designing authentic Provençal gardens that are water-wise, deeply connected to their surroundings and shaped by the philosophy of balance, simplicity and nature. Every project on the French Riviera begins with a careful reading of the site, revealing its topography, architecture and natural character.
Our studio combines climate-adapted planting, natural stone, noble materials and refined spatial composition to create a bespoke mediterranean garden. As both garden designer and landscape architect, we prepare concept sketches, technical drawings and construction documents before coordinating experienced local craftsmen to ensure every detail is faithfully executed. Rather than reproducing traditional Japanese gardens, we reinterpret their principles within the landscapes of Nice and the French Riviera, creating harmonious outdoor living design that feels natural, elegant and timeless.
Whether your villa is located in Antibes, Cannes, Mougins, Valbonne, Biot, Villefranche-sur-Mer or Saint-Paul-de-Vence, our landscape architect studio creates distinctive gardens tailored to the Mediterranean lifestyle.
