Studio Mathieu Besnier is a landscape design practice operating across the South of France, from the French Riviera to the Provençal hinterland. Whether you’re looking to explore our Mediterranean garden design approach or simply want to see what we’ve built, our project portfolio tells the story better than any brochure could.
The studio was founded in 2015 by Mathieu Besnier, who spent ten formative years in California studying Japanese garden aesthetics and the art of contemplative landscaping. That time abroad — confronting dry climates, learning to work with nature rather than against it — shaped everything that followed. Back on the Côte d’Azur, he brought that sensibility home and applied it to Mediterranean soil.
What makes the work here different isn’t just the aesthetic (though yes, we do care deeply about beauty). It’s the underlying logic: every garden is designed as a living system. Inspired by Wabi-Sabi philosophy, we favour materials that age gracefully, plant palettes that resist drought, and spaces that actually invite you to slow down. No over-engineered showpieces — just gardens that feel right, season after season.
Mathieu holds hands-on expertise in dry garden design, contemporary landscaping, Japanese gardens, and high-end villa exteriors. Each project comes with full technical documentation, precise costing, and close collaboration with trusted local contractors across the Alpes-Maritimes — from Nice and Cannes to Mougins, Grasse, Saint-Paul de Vence and Monaco.
